Para also included their relatively new Power Extractor on the Hawg 9. Designed by Para’s creative engineer, and President, Ted Szabo, the pivoting claw is always under proper tension and has 50% more contact with the rim of the case for controlled feeding from the magazine to the chamber. The increased surface area also guarantees more positive extraction.

Shots Fired

I fired the Hawg 9 with a variety of loads to test for accuracy and reliability. With my targets at 18 yards I found that the little compact was capabe of firing 5 shots into a cluster just over an inch and a quarter. I fired all groups from a seated rest using a Millett BenchMaster for support. One thing that was immediately clear was that the Hawg 9 gun is as easy pistol to shoot, even with hot defense ammo. The dual spring recoil system seems to help soak up some of the recoil because the gun shoots very soft. The trigger pull is relatively crisp and it breaks at a sensible 5.75 pounds. The only loads that caused any problems were the South African PMP 115-grain FMJ rounds and it seemed that they didn’t possess enough power to cycle the slide. In fact, almost every shot resulted in a failure to eject. This isn’t a problem for a gun designed to shoot high performance defense ammunition, but it does show that you absolutely must check whatever load you want to carry in your pistol.

I had a chance to shoot the Hawg 9 on another outing when I met an old friend for some range practice. Bob Molnar is an IPSC Master Class-shooter and was a good mentor to me when I was competing. Bob’s an outstanding shot and faster than anyone else I know and I’m certain the only reason that he is not a Grand Master shooter is because he never had a sponsor to help with the cost of competing and the related travel. Freshly retired, Bob is now living the dream of shooting as much as he’d like to.
